EXPERIENCE

Originally from County Durham, I started my architectural education back in 2006 at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne before moving to London to continue postgraduate studies at Kingston and later the London Metropolitan.
During my postgraduate years, I worked freelance developing planning and construction drawings for large-scale private residential projects in southwest London and also took a role with DAAM (Designer Artists Architects and Makers) working on designs for the new Nobu Hotel in Shoreditch and private Villas in Ibiza.
In 2012 I started my career with the award-winning timber pioneers Waugh Thistleton Architects and quickly established myself as a key project lead delivering a range of large-scale residential, commercial and cultural schemes in the UK and overseas. (Shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2017)
After relocating from London to Nottinghamshire in 2021, I joined the team at Henry Boot Construction in a design management role overseeing competitive tenders and project delivery on-site with key clients in the healthcare, education and advanced manufacturing sectors.
With a strong technical background in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), I assume a pivotal role in the implementation of these processes within the business at HBC, fostering supply chain growth and keeping at the forefront of industry advancements.
In 2022, I established Stephen Illingworth Architects to focus on supporting local private clients and empower community-led initiatives.
